I love how every day is different with its own challenges. One day I’m in the office and the next on site setting up a network.

The fact that I get to see something real come out of nothing. We are building this place from the ground up, and in this case, it is going to be a home for kids who need it. That is a great feeling.

I love the variety of my role. No two days are the same but also at Stepnell no two projects are the same, so it is really exciting for what the future holds.

Working on site alongside a team gives you the opportunity to see a project through and understand how each profession comes together to run the project.

I love having the opportunity to put what I learn at university into practice at work. Applying the theories and concepts from my studies to real-world projects not only deepens my understanding but also enhances my ability to contribute meaningfully to the team. This hands-on experience bridges the gap between academia and industry.

I wish to thank the management team for contributing towards our careers events. Students have benefited significantly from being able to talk to Stepnell staff about the construction industry and I know many were very grateful to find out more about this important career pathway.

The service, communication and quality of work were fantastic throughout the programme. The site manager, Kane Foster, worked closely with our staff and was very responsive to any requests working flexibly to accommodate our needs as a working school. We felt we had a very positive working relationship with Stepnells and their door was always open.

I wish to thank the construction team for all their hard work and professionalism over the project. Any disruption was kept to a minimum and communication between school and the team was strong throughout. The work has had very positive impact on the school environment and rooms are now much more pleasant to learn in since the work was completed.

Social Value – Nottingham’s Girls Academy

Category: Social Value

I think the thing that stands out for me working with Stepnell is their focus on social value and how they go above and beyond to help and support their local and regional communities. I was fortunate to support Stepnell at an event at Nottingham’s Girls Academy, where we engaged with 150 young girls to get them interested in the construction industry.

Social Value – D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership

Sue engaged the young people by building on their existing knowledge to discuss jobs in the construction industry, personal branding, and interview skills. The learners were thoroughly engaged throughout the session, and as their confidence grew, they were able to identify and apply their own transferable skills in a practical task. The learners left having broken down any preconceptions, overcome stereotypes, and broadened horizons.

Social Value – Brackenfield SEND School

Category: Social Value

Students from Brackenfield SEND School had a great time learning about employment opportunities at Stepnell, they were all engaged during the presentation, becoming comfortable and confident enough to ask and answer questions. They also gained insight into what Stepnell looks for in potential employees as well as valuable interview tips. The fun construction challenge ensured a perfect ending to the session.

Social Value – advice sessions

I knew we were doing social value but I didn’t know how to measure and record it. Thanks to your help yesterday, I am more confident about assigning proxy values to our activities.

Chesterfield Wellbeing Hub

It has been a pleasure for Southgate & Sarabia Architects to work with Stepnell on the Health & Wellbeing Hub at Chesterfield Royal Hospital. The team from start to finish were great to work with, taking a proactive approach on the design and build of the project.

The team pushed for sustainability, which was really refreshing for a contractor to be so passionate about sustainability. It was great for the team to work in a collaborative way, getting involved with events outside the project, which was an opportunity for the teams to work together for a good cause.
