A career with Stepnell means you will be part of a forward thinking and flourishing company that will invest their time and resources in developing you, so that you are equipped to continue the excellent work we are so passionate about

We want to provide you with the best possible start with our company. We want to place you in an environment where your creativity will be embraced, your skills honed, and where you will be faced with an immensely diverse variety of challenges every single day.

You’ll be empowered to make a difference and have the opportunity to become part of a team where your success is recognised and rewarded.

As an equal opportunities employer, we value all of our employees and want to see them succeed in their careers. We offer support and training, but more importantly, give people the opportunity to grow and truly make a difference.

We provide clear career progression routes and training for all levels of employee. As a rapidly growing business, this provides endless opportunities for colleagues to progress to the next level and be rewarded for their efforts with promotion. This is especially apparent for members of our site management teams, the ‘rock stars’ of our business who are at the coal face, delivering the projects we are so proud of.

We’re ambitious, and continue to grow our business; but despite our stature, we remain a family business at heart. We combine the focus and accessibility of a regional contractor with a depth of technical competency, professional capability and national reach usually reserved only for larger organisations. So, whether you are looking for work experience, an apprenticeship, a trainee or graduate opportunity or a job opportunity, and if you have the talent and ambition to join us, please get in touch:

What makes Stepnell different?

We are large enough to provide real opportunities for career progression and small enough to mean that no two days are ever the same.

We truly invest in our future workforce and already exceed the aim of the industry initiative ‘The 5% Club’ by ensuring that at least 10% of our workforce is made up of apprentices, trainees or graduates – we are currently achieving 13%.

You will get the opportunity to be more involved than you might with one of our larger competitors, enabling you to gain a much broader experience and develop your skill set a lot faster.

Our business owners are hands-on, accessible and visible around the business. You have more opportunity to be seen, heard, and to make a positive impact from the word go.

The Stepnell Emerging Talent Programme

Our award winning emerging talent programme is industry leading – 13% of our workforce are graduates, trainees and apprentices and we receive fantastic feedback from them on their learning and development experience with us.

Trainees/Apprenticeships – earn while you learn, 80% of your learning will be on the job, whilst 20% will be working towards recognised qualifications and learning new skills to help you develop your career further.

Summer and Year Out Placements – our placement schemes allow you to apply the skills you have learned at university. You will get support and guidance from experienced members of our team. It is also an amazing opportunity to showcase your skills, which could lead to an offer of employment after you graduate.

Graduates – this structured two-year programme will support you in progressing in your chosen career and give you the tools and experience to qualify for membership in your chosen professional body. The scheme combines practical on-the-job experiences with first line management skills and professional development.

Why work at Stepnell?

George Jarman, Trainee Quantity Surveyor

“Stepnell are an excellent company to work for on multiple levels. I have received constant support and encouragement from the Directors and other colleagues, which really helps you to maximise your potential. Although being a very professional place to work, the working environment is truly enjoyable and positive. You really do get to work as part of a team who work together to get the job done.”

Charlotte Chambers, Trainee Quantity Surveyor

“Stepnell has allowed me to gain a better understanding of Quantity Surveying in a real life working environment. I have really enjoyed being part of a fun team and being given responsibility when it comes to tasks. I feel I have learnt more at Stepnell that I have at University.”

Joe Eccles, Trainee Quantity Surveyor

“I joined Stepnell following a successful work placement and began my career within a site management team and am currently working in a variety of other departments to gain experience. Parallel to this, Stepnell are fully supportive in additional learning whereby I currently undertake a part-time HNC in Construction Management. Through their commitment to both practical and theoretical learning, I will ultimately be able to make an informed decision on my degree choice and become a well-rounded and valuable employee.”

Emma Mills, Trainee Site Manager

“There is often an assumption that apprentices and trainees make the tea and do the admin jobs, but I have been given a huge amount of responsibility from working on site and watching my managers solve problems and deal with unexpected challenges.”

Luke Beardsmore, Former Year Out Placement Student, now Assistant Site Manager
