Overview
Harpur Hill Primary School has taken a significant step forward in creating a modern, inclusive, and inspiring learning environment with the opening of its new dance studio and enhanced KS2 facilities. Delivered by Stepnell’s East Midlands team, this £1.4 million project, commissioned by Derbyshire County Council and designed by Concertus, demonstrates how investment in education infrastructure can enrich both the school and the wider community.
The Grand Opening
The official unveiling of the new facilities was a fantastic celebration, attended by pupils, staff, and special guests. West End performer and choreographer Kristian Cunningham opened the new dance studio, delighting the audience with a live performance before joining the Re:Bound Dance Club for a creative showcase of local talent.

Vicky Giliker, Headteacher, Harpur Hill Primary School, commented:
“The new dance studio and classrooms are a real asset to our school, improving the facilities for the children and wider community. It was wonderful to celebrate this on our official opening day.”
Project Delivery
Stepnell’s holistic approach ensured the smooth delivery of a transformative project that included:
- Two new classrooms to enhance KS2 learning.
- A dedicated group room for collaborative activities.
- A central lobby creating a welcoming entrance.
- Unisex and accessible toilets to improve inclusivity.
- Additional storage, a plant room, and a cleaner’s store to support efficient operations.
- A covered external canopy connecting the building to the staff car park for all-weather accessibility.

Sustainability at the Core
As part of Stepnell’s commitment to sustainable construction, Step Energy installed a grid-connected 8.10 kWp solar PV system, which will:
- Generate 7,140 kWh of renewable energy annually — all used on-site.
- Save 1,380 kg of CO₂ per year, equivalent to planting 63 trees.
This forward-thinking energy solution reduces operational costs and supports the school’s environmental goals.

Collaboration & Community Impact
The success of the project reflects the collaborative efforts of Derbyshire County Council, Concertus, and Stepnell. Together, the partners delivered a facility that not only meets current educational needs but is also adaptable for future growth.
Cllr Jack Bradley, Cabinet Member for SEND and Education at Derbyshire County Council, stated:
“We are very happy to fund this innovative development. It’s exciting to see the design come to life, and it’s clear how many benefits it will offer to students creatively and academically.”
Tom Sewell, Regional Director at Stepnell said:
“This project showcases the value of a complete construction partner in supporting an evolving education sector. Working closely with Derbyshire County Council and Concertus, we’ve created an inspiring learning environment that spurs growth in local communities and supports all children to aim high and achieve.”

Russell Short, Principal Architectural Designer at Concertus said:
“We’re proud to have helped deliver a sustainable, energy-efficient design that meets the educational needs of the school. We hope this facility continues to benefit the community for many years to come. The Harpur Hill Primary School development is one of several education infrastructure projects funded by Derbyshire County Council, reflecting a wider commitment to sustainable, high-quality learning environments across the region.”
Looking Ahead
The Harpur Hill Primary School development forms part of a wider strategy by Derbyshire County Council to invest in high-quality, sustainable educational environments across the region, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to thrive, both academically and creatively.
