Tom Wakeford

Managing Director

Tom has led the growth and development of the construction business to be one of the leading regional contractors. Tom manages all the construction regions to challenge, enhance and improve every element of how we operate.

Tom uses his excellent communication skills to develop exceptional teams across the business working for clients who seek contractors as their partners. He is passionate about the continued development of the service we provide for our clients, particularly through our first class Stepnell employees.

Robert Speirs

Director

ICIOB, Bsc (Hons) Construction Management


Robert is a board director and the director responsible for leading Stepnell’s Southern operations, managing teams in Bristol, Poole and Southampton.

Building upon Stepnell’s reputation for delivering high calibre buildings and exceptional client service, Robert has steered the business through an exciting period of growth in the south, securing a series of significant and high profile developments and overseeing their successful completion.

Robert was instrumental in the introduction of ‘teamship’ into the business through his passion for Rugby and the management techniques of Sir Clive Woodward.

Tom Sewell

Tom is responsible for leading and expanding our East Midlands and North West construction operations from our offices in Nottingham and Liverpool. Tom is also our Director of Health & Safety, he leads our SHEQ (Safety, Health, Environment & Quality) team which brings together Health & Safety, Sustainability and Environment and our Systems teams.

With over 25 years’ experience in the construction industry, Tom brings a wealth of technical and local knowledge to the region. He has a passion for developing strong relationships and helping clients maximise the whole life value of their investment.

Graham Lambert

Director

MSc

Graham leads Stepnell’s Midlands region, centred around our Rugby and Wantage offices. Working closely with colleagues across all construction regions and specialist services, he ensures strong “One Stepnell” alignment across projects and teams.

With extensive experience in both regional and national leadership roles spanning development and construction, Graham brings a naturally collaborative approach. His focus is on strengthening the Midlands business and driving continued success across our schemes.

His leadership style is firmly rooted in a people-first ethos, placing emphasis on client support, teamwork, operational excellence, and consistently delivering quality in everything we do.

John Green

Commercial Director

BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying, MRICS

John is a driven construction professional with a proven track record in leading commercial teams and supporting the effective management of project and strategic issues. John oversees the commercial function and works closely with our regional teams to encourage continual improvement and efficiency.

John is committed to creating and developing teams through open communication and knowledge sharing between all disciplines and has a passion for supporting Stepnell employees to realise their potential. John is a practised advocate of listening to varying points of view to collectively overcome challenges and realise opportunities, and to do so with a smile!

 

 

Lorraine Hillsdon

Director of People

Assoc CIPD

Lorraine joined Stepnell in 2018 as Head of People & Culture following a 20 year career in Human Resources and Training. Lorraine initially began her career in Training and Development, working in a number of roles, when she then moved into Human Resources and completed her Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resource Management.

Lorraine along with Rob Speirs were instrumental in creating and implementing Teamship at Stepnell. Lorraine is committed to creating, developing and supporting high performing teams through Teamship.

She also promotes an ‘open door’ policy and encourages colleagues to talk to her if they need help resolving issues or if they want to share best practice.

Mike Smedley

Strategic Director

MRICS, FCIOB

Mike leads the growth and development of Stepnell’s specialist divisions, including Step Energy, Lawford Bespoke Joinery, Plant & Fleet, Concrete Repairs and our emerging CCTV services. With more than 30 years’ experience at senior levels in major national contractors, Mike is responsible for building high-performing, self-sufficient business units that strengthen Stepnell’s complete construction offering.

A Chartered Quantity Surveyor and Fellow of the CIOB, Mike brings expertise in business planning, risk management, tendering and operational leadership. He is passionate about shaping strong management structures and enabling teams to deliver outstanding service and performance nationwide, while creating resilient operations that support Stepnell’s long-term growth.

Peter Commins

Non Executive Director

Peter is a highly regarded construction industry Director with a lifetime of leading complex construction projects.

Peter provides great support and challenge to the Stepnell Board through his expertise and experience.
