Stepnell starts construction of Langwith's new state-of-the-art Medical Centre

Stepnell and specialist care sector developer Brackley Investments have celebrated the start of construction on a modern new NHS medical centre to replace Langwith Medical Centre, a primary care base run by Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust.

Brackley has appointed Nottingham-based Stepnell to the £1.1 million construction contract to deliver the new Langwith Medical Centre, which is located within sight of the current outdated practice premises, on Main Street, Langwith.

The development – set for completion in September 2019 – will replace the existing medical centre building with a state-of-the-art facility providing significantly more space and allowing patients access to a wider range of services.

Designed by Thomas Wilson Architects, the single-storey brick building now taking shape will be four times larger than the current medical centre – situated to the west of the new development – and provide specialist accommodation for health visitors, district and community nurses and therapists.

Bolsover District Council and Langwith Parish Council support the new development. It is under construction on part of the village recreation ground, including a skate park area which is being relocated. Stepnell is creating a new 26-space car park and new access from Main Street as part of the scheme.

William Jones, chief operating officer for Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust, says: “We are delighted to see work progressing so well on this new health centre. We look forward to being able to move patient care into the brand-new building later this year. The current premises on Main Street are out-grown and out-dated for the level of services we want to provide to patients. This brand new building will ensure we are providing the very best facilities for patients in Langwith.”

David Brill, director of project management for Brackley Investments, comments: “It is very gratifying to see this project start on site. This has been the culmination of many years’ hard work on the part of Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust, Langwith Parish Council, Bolsover District Council and Brackley Investments. We are confident that this facility will provide excellent health care services.”

Stepnell regional director Thomas Sewell says: “Our team is delighted to be delivering this important new community facility which will provide staff and patients with a larger, more modern health centre, fully in line with NHS England standards and able to accommodate an expanded range of services. Stepnell has an extensive record of delivering high-quality buildings for health and care clients and we are delighted to be drawing on our wide-ranging sector expertise to create this new facility for Brackley.”

The project is supported by Hardwick Clinical Commissioning Group. Once the building is completed, Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust will be tenants, providing the direct patient care.
