Stepnell does double at Leicestershire Construction Awards
Stepnell is celebrating double success at the ProCon Leicestershire Awards 2018, which honour the region’s leading property and construction projects.
The company won Large Residential Scheme of the Year for its high-end student accommodation development for Zone Developments in Princess Road East, Leicester.
At the same awards event – held at Leicester City Football Club’s King Power Stadium – the new Mountsorrel Memorial Centre community building constructed by Stepnell in Mountsorrel village, Leicestershire, was named Large Non-Residential Scheme of the Year.
Judged by industry experts, the sought-after ProCon Awards showcase projects demonstrating innovation and creativity in property development, incorporating sustainable features, design excellence and the highest construction quality.
“To come away from these important awards with two titles is a magnificent achievement which bears witness to the professional excellence of the Nottingham team behind these exceptional projects,” says Stepnell regional director Thomas Sewell. “I would like to congratulate everyone involved.”
In Leicester, Stepnell’s multi-million pound Princess Road East student accommodation scheme – designed by Hinckley and London-based architects MAS architecture Ltd – has created a high-specification building providing 110 self-contained studio bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, plus a cinema room and gym. The scheme incorporates energy-saving technology, including heat recovery ventilation systems and air source heat pumps for hot water heating. Stepnell has since been awarded a recently completed contract for Zone Developments to transform former commercial buildings on the corner of West Walk and Princess Road into 85 self-contained studio bedrooms, and a project to build a 91-bedroom student accommodation building with a gym, cinema room and study pods at De Montfort Mews. Both schemes were also designed by MAS architecture Ltd.
Stepnell regional director Thomas Sewell says: “I’m proud that the leading-edge student accommodation for Zone Developments at Princess Road has been recognised by the ProCon Leicestershire Awards. The well-deserved award is a tribute to our team’s successful delivery of a demanding project in a high-profile city centre location.” Zone director Neil Thakkar comments: “This project has resulted in outstanding student accommodation which fully meets the expectations and lifestyle of today’s students. To receive additional industry recognition for the scheme’s achievements at the ProCon Awards is extremely gratifying.” MAS architecture Ltd managing director Muthar Al-Salloum says: “I am very happy that MAS has secured recognition at the ProCon Leicestershire Awards. The success of Princess Road East is a testament to the hard work and positive partnership between developer, architect and contractor.”
Stepnell’s £3.9 million construction of the new Memorial Centre at Mountsorrel village, Leicestershire, was carried out on behalf of Mountsorrel War Memorial Trust and Mountsorrel Parish Council and designed as a tribute to the local people who died in the First and Second World Wars. It features attractive and flexible community facilities including a main hall which can be used as a theatre, a café, two shops and a crèche, plus a music and arts performance practice room, meeting and conference rooms. Stepnell regional director Thomas Sewell says: “It was a pleasure and an honour to work on this significant community project which is an important memorial to those local people who died in the two World Wars, and which has also provided an impressive range of new facilities for the local population.” The lead architect on the project, Matthew Kirk of Franklin Ellis Architects, adds: “It’s already been extremely rewarding to hear the positive feedback from the community on the Memorial Centre and winning this award is the icing on the cake. I am so pleased to have had the opportunity to work on this vital and significantly important building, which not only preserves the memory of those who died at war but also provides a much-needed multi-purpose facility for the local community.”
