Stepnell completes Churchdown Medical Centre
A state-of-the-art medical centre in Churchdown village, Gloucestershire, which will provide primary care facilities for up to 20,000 local patients, has been completed by our West Midlands-based construction team.
The £2.7m Churchdown Medical Centre at Parton Road has been purpose-built for care specialist developers Brackley Investments and replaces the 50-year-old Churchdown Surgery on St John’s Avenue.
Larger than its predecessor, the 1,191 sq m modern centre provides consultation space for 13 GPs – including training space – as well as two nurse consulting rooms, and four treatment rooms. Accessible via lift, two multi-purpose rooms for health promotion and educational use (complete with their own waiting area) are on the first floor, along with administrative areas and staff welfare facilities including a training room / library and a quiet area. A 130 sq m pharmacy with consultation room has also been built on site.
The development includes a 65-space car park with two electric car charging points, 12 cycle spaces and landscaped the surrounding grounds.
The energy-efficient centre features photovoltaic solar panels on the roof, helping it achieve a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ standard for sustainability.
West Midlands regional director John Rawlinson says: “Our experienced team has greatly enjoyed working with Brackley to deliver this modern healthcare centre which is desperately needed by Churchdown and the surrounding area and will provide significantly improved facilities for both patients and staff.”
As part of Stepnell’s commitment to supporting the communities where it builds, local subcontractors were employed to work on the year-long construction programme which also provided training opportunities for apprentice bricklayers.
Churchdown Medical Centre has been sensitively designed by Thomas Wilson Architects to complement the surrounding residential area, featuring traditional brick and render walls and a trussed roof with concrete tiles.
Geoff Simm, development director at Brackley Investments, says: “The state-of-the-art Churchdown Medical Centre has been delivered on time and on budget by Stepnell whilst achieving the challenging target of a BREEAM Excellent rated building as required by the NHS. Stepnell worked in partnership with Brackley, the doctors and their advisors throughout the construction phase ensuring the delivery of a building that will enable the doctors and their staff to deliver a step change in community-based care to their patients.”
