Shefford Medical Centre

Shefford, Bedfordshire

Providing a responsive and agile approach to adapt to the client’s changing needs, incorporating their new requirements, whilst ensuring the original completion date was met

Located on the outskirts of Bedfordshire village, Shefford, this bespoke new medical centre was built to facilitate Dr Cakebread & Partners and the Bedfordshire Hospital NHS Trust.

Constructed on a greenfield site, this £3.7 million ‘starfish’ shaped building comprises a mix of five single storey and two storey wings, with a two storey central core. The building’s five wings house treatment, consultation and administration facilities.

Midway through the delivery of the project it was decided that Bedford Hospital and the Primary Care Trust would take over the lease upon completion. With a new client in place, a partial redesign of the internal layout was necessary to accommodate the Primary Care Trust. Of more significance, was the fact that this new medical centre would now need to meet with hospital standards in many aspects of the build; services, fittings, sanitaryware and finishes all had to be upgraded to meet the new requirements.

Despite these challenges, Stepnell were able to incorporate all of the client’s revised requirements and handover the building, to the specification and quality standards required, on programme.
