Creating new sports facilities for the pupils and staff of the prestigious Gordon’s School in Woking

This £5.4 million new sports centre for Gordon’s School in Woking – a non-selective state boarding school, was delivered under a Design and Build contract. The building is a ‘4 badminton court size’ Sports Hall, as set out by Sport England guidance, with associated changing and support spaces.

Additionally, a new all-weather pitch has been installed which has effectively upgraded an existing pitch to a facility for football and rugby with increased carrying capacity and a high quality playing surface to support curriculum development. The new facilities and established playing fields has created a sports hub for the school to strengthen their ‘sport for all’ approach.

The build consisted of a steel frame, and sheet piling as well as CFA piling. The building is timber clad and has PV panels on the roof.

“Gordon’s School selected Stepnell for our £6m sports hall and all-weather pitch not just because they tendered the best value bid, but because of the manner in which their bid was put together, as well as their experience of working in education.

At every stage of the tender process, Stepnell sent all relevant personnel to site and clearly worked as a professional team together, and with the subcontractors; this meant that we knew they had really considered every aspect of the project carefully, putting forward suggestions for value-engineering and really wanting the best for us the client, and therefore our students.”
