East Lancashire Crematorium

Design and build of a complete ‘turnkey’ Crematorium on a site identified and owned by the Local Authority adjacent to an existing cemetery including all landscaping, fitting out and installation of crematory equipment as part of a public/private partnership with Bury Metropolitan Borough Council.  Development works included significant utility infrastructure works required to facilitate highway improvements.

Prior to commencing any work on site Stepnell had extensive dialogue and meetings with Bury Metropolitan Borough Council and representatives of its Bereavement Services before writing and agreeing a method of working that set out the protocols for site operations and standards of behaviour.  Issues that were covered in the methodology included; access arrangements for site deliveries, car parking, proper segregation of public and staff from work areas, control of dust and noise, co-ordination with Bereavement Services management to agree notice to suspend all works during sensitive services and or interments.

This project was completed without a single complaint from the public and was testament to the both the management of Bereavement Services and the Site who as a result of the process of agreeing the methodology fully understood the operational sensitivity of both construction and bereavement services.
